Putin claims the Bucha case in Ukrainian is ‘fake.’
According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, images and footage of dead bodies scattered across the Ukrainian town of Bucha were faked.
Putin compared Ukrainian allegations that Russian servicemen executed civilians in Bucha to what he said was the staging by the West of a chemical weapons attack in Syria aimed at incriminating Bashar al-Assad, speaking at a televised news conference after talks with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko.
“In Bucha, it’s the same ruse,” Putin remarked.
Residents of Bucha, a town outside of Kyiv that Russian troops controlled for several weeks before retreating have been accused of being executed by the Russian military. Western governments have demanded that those responsible for the deaths of civilians be brought to justice.
Russia has accused Ukraine of creating the horrific sight to undermine peace talks and force the West to retaliate with harsher sanctions.
On February 24, Russia dispatched tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine in what it described as a “special operation” aimed at degrading its southern neighbor’s military capabilities and rooting out “dangerous nationalists.”
Ukraine’s soldiers have resisted, and the West has applied sweeping sanctions to push Russia’s forces to withdraw.
