Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has praised Rahul Dravid’s influence on his hitting, saying that the legendary Indian’s advice on how to play spin opened up a “whole new world” for him.
Pietersen said his experiences in the Indian Premier League, batting alongside world-class players like Dravid and Virender Sehwag, helped him expand his repertoire of shots.
Pietersen played for various IPL teams such as the former Deccan Chargers, Delhi Daredevils, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
“Dravid wrote me the most beautiful email, explaining the art of playing spin and since then it was a whole new world,” said former England hitting star.
“The key point was to look up the length as soon as the ball was delivered: wait for the roulette wheel and make your decision,” said the 40-year-old, quoted by ‘Sky Sports’ during a discussion about how one day the batting had developed over the years.
During his 10 years as an England player, from 2004 to 2014, Pietersen was one of the world’s most explosive hitters, especially in limited-limit cricket.
He scored 8,181 runs from 104 Tests to an average of 47.28. From 136 ODI, it reached 4440 at an average of 40.73.
Pietersen said his famous switch hit was in part a product of the hours he spent playing squash when he was young.
