Rahul Gandhi will meet Punjab MLAs today.

Congressional top leader Rahul Gandhi will meet with members of the Punjab Communist Party at his Delhi residence on Friday amid furious infighting in state unity ahead of Assembly elections early next year.

Earlier this week, on Wednesday, Punjab Pradesh Congressional Committee Chairman Sunil Jakhar and Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal met with Rahul in Delhi to discuss the current crisis within the party.

Former Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu disagrees with Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and both have spoken publicly in the media, with Sidhu criticizing the Chief Minister for failing to accuse the culprits of the incident of Kotkapura sacrilege.

Sidhu had resigned from Amarinder Singh’s cabinet in July 2019 after being stripped of the portfolio of local bodies and has been in the political wilderness ever since.

A three-member AICC panel created by Sonia Gandhi to crack down on factionalism in the Punjab Congress presented its report to the party’s acting chairman, suggesting a renewal of state unity to accommodate all sections. The panel chaired by the leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and composed of the general secretary of the AICC in-charge of Punjab affairs, Harish Rawat, and former MP Aggarwal suggested that Navjot Singh Sidhu be “adequately housed”.

Punjab is crucial to Congress as it is one of the few states where the party is in power and the outcome will also have an impact on the party’s out-of-state prospects. The next assembly elections are scheduled for next year.
