Ravichandran Ashwin, who was named Man of the Match, and Moeen Ali narrowly missed some historic milestones on the fourth and final day of the second India vs England Test in Chennai as India won by 317 runs to tie the series level at 1 -1 and overtake England in the WTC points table.

Ashwin scored a century and took 8 wickets in the Test (India’s spinning cartel represented a total of 17 wickets in the match) and narrowly missed the rare feat of a century and a double of 10 wickets. The last wickets in England’s second inning went to Ashwin’s spinning partners Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav.

Only four players have achieved this double: Alan Davidson, Ian Botham, Imran Khan and Shakib al Hasan. Ashwin narrowly missed being the first Indian off-roader to record this feat.

England’s Moeen Ali also missed a milestone during his entertaining cameo in the closing minutes of the match. It was the last ground to fall, after an 18-ball 43, which included five sixes and three fours. For a time, it looked like he was going to break the record for the fastest Round 50, currently held by Misbah ul Haq for having scored fifty in 21 balls.

Axar Patel is only the second left-arm spinner to make a five-course course in the Test’s debut against England since Australian Jack Saunders did it in 1902. The other was Alf Valentine for the West Indies in 1950.
