Retired HC judge will investigate Param Bir Singh corruption

Maharashtra Interior Minister Anil Deshmukh said on Sunday that a retired high court judge will carry out an investigation into allegations of corruption leveled against him by former Mumbai police chief Param Bir Singh.

The truth will come out after an investigation into the matter, Deshmukh told reporters at the Nagpur airport.

On March 20, Singh in a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray created a stir in Maharashtra political circles by stating that Deshmukh wanted police officers to collect Rs 100 million a month from bars and hotels.

Deshmukh had later dismissed the accusations against him.

Under fire for handling the bomb scare outside the home of industrialist Mukesh Ambani in Mumbai, on March 17 the state government transferred Singh from the post of city police commissioner to the low-key National Guard Department.

Deshmukh said Sunday that he had asked Thackeray to launch an investigation into the allegations made against him by Singh. “The prime minister and the state government have decided that a retired superior court judge will carry out an investigation into the allegations against me. Whatever the truth will come out,” he said.

Deshmukh was responding to a question about Shiv Sena’s deputy Sanjay Raut’s claim that he was appointed state interior minister “accidentally”.

In his weekly column on the party spokesman ‘Saamana‘, Raut on Sunday called Deshmukh an “accidental interior minister,” claiming he got the job after senior PNC leaders Jayant Patil and Dilip Walse-Patil refused to take responsibility.
