PORTLAND, Pray. (KOIN) – Oregon authorities arrested a man wearing a Ricky Bobby Costume “Talladega Nights” after a savage series of crimes Tuesday night.
Officers detained Alexis Ibarra Gomez in Oregon City after numerous law enforcement agencies and the Clackamas County SWAT unit joined in the chase. Police said the crime spree included a stolen truck, shooting at a motorist, a suitcase full of stolen jewelry, a police chase, a change of clothes, and a car crash into the garage.
It started around 6 p.m., the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office said, when the driver of a Chevy Colorado called 911 to report that a black GMC truck was driving erratically. The 911 caller was trying to get a license plate number to give to dispatchers when the GMC pulled up on the highway, and someone in the truck pointed a gun and fired back at the 911 caller.
The person who called 911 said he ducked and then responded with a rifle. Authorities said none of the shooters hit anyone. The person who called 911 is cooperating, authorities said.
Meanwhile, the GMC, which was stolen from Salem, Oregon, took off. Clackamas County officers saw the truck driving the wrong way on Highway 213. Efforts to stop the truck, including the use of spike strips, failed and the truck continued on.
About 18 minutes after the initial 911 call, the GMC slammed into a detached garage at someone’s home, authorities said. Gomez got out of the truck, jumped over a fence, and ran into the woods.
A woman at the GMC was seen walking away and was quickly stopped by officers. She was interviewed and later released, authorities said.
Not long after, Gomez broke into a home in the nearby Beaver Lake area, authorities said. No one was home at the time, but the landlord alerted law enforcement after the intruder activated the home’s alarm system.
As the situation unfolded, the owner explained what happened before.
“Apparently one of the neighbors saw the man break into the house, they came in and the man was acting like he was unconscious,” said neighbor Bruce Riggs.
The Clackamas County SWAT unit surrounded the home. The Washington County Air Unit went to the area and authorities said they could see Gomez using a flashlight moving from room to room.
“We got almost like an Amber Alert when it came in and all of our phones rang at once and it was basically the county telling us there was police business in the neighborhood, so we turned on a scanner and started listening,” Riggs said. .
Neighbors were stunned when a crash, foot chase and freak robbery occurred in their typically quiet, rural neighborhood.
“It’s very different in this neighborhood because you generally don’t have this kind of activity,” Riggs said.
At around 9 p.m., three hours from the initial 911 call, Gomez left the house with a bicycle, saw the heavy police presence, and surrendered.
He was wearing the Ricky Bobby costume at the time, authorities said. He found the costume inside the house and put it on at some point while he was inside.
Gomez, 25, is being held on a $ 342,500 bond. He faces charges of attempted assault, attempt to elude a police officer, breach of driver duties, robbery, plus four counts of prior arrests: Failure to appear for illegal use of a weapon, failure to appear after aiming a weapon at another person, failure to appear for threatening and illegal use of a vehicle.
