Roosevelt girls punch ticket to class AA soccer state championship.
SIOUX FALLS – Seats in the Class AA Women’s Soccer State Championship were up for grabs Tuesday night. In a semifinal, Lincoln 3 seeded against Roosevelt 10.
Lincoln advanced to the semifinals with victories over Jefferson and Rapid City Central. The Patriots defeated the Cavaliers 1-0 in the first round and then beat Rapid City Central 4-2 in the quarterfinals.
Roosevelt defeated Pierre 1-0 in the first round and then defeated second seed Brandon Valley 1-0 in the quarterfinals.
The first half featured solid play from both teams’ goalkeepers, as neither team was able to find the back of the net. In the second half, Roosevelt had the best scoring chances early, but a Cassidy Jennings save kept the game scoreless.
Roosevelt would finally make a breakthrough with less than 25 minutes to go when Isabel Peterson beat Jennings to put the Rough Riders up 1-0. Roosevelt’s defense would carry on from there as the Rough Riders took the 1-0 victory.
Roosevelt will meet Rapid City Stevens in the Class AA State Championship on Saturday. The Raiders defeated first seed Aberdeen Central, 3-1 to score their ticket. The Class AA State Soccer Championship for girls begins Saturday night at 5:00 pm at Howard Wood Field.
