Second Test, Day 3: West Indies 41-3, leads Bangladesh by 154 races

The Bangladeshi spinners shared the first plots to prevent the West Indies from taking full control of the second and final test on Saturday.

West Indies went 41-3 in their second inning on day three for a 154-run lead.

Nkrumah Bonner (8) and the night watchman Jomel Warrican (2) are in the fold.

Offspinner Rahkeem Cornwall previously helped the West Indies take a 113-run lead in the first inning, claiming 5-74 when Bangladesh was eliminated by 296 in response to West Indies’ 409. It was the second five for Cornwall in test cricket.

Fast pitchers Shannon Gabriel (3-70) and Alzarri Joseph (2-60) also hit.

Liton Das was Bangladesh’s top scorer with 71, while Mehidy Hasan, fresh from his first century in Test 1, scored 57. Mushfiqur Rahim contributed 54.

Liton and Mehidy shared a 126-run position for seventh to cut the first-inning deficit.

Cornwall bolstered the West Indies position by firing the two night batsmen, Mushfiqur and Mohammad Mithun, after Bangladesh resumed at 105-4.

Cornwall had Mithun caught by captain Kraigg Brathwaite at 15. Mushfiqur up his 22nd Test 50, pushing Cornwall’s delivery into the middle on a single. But he was fired by Cornwall shortly thereafter while attempting a reverse sweep.

The West Indies seemed poised for a great advantage, but Liton and Mehidy resisted.

Liton climbed his seventh Test 50 with a fierce cut past the limit point, and has reached 1,000 test runs in 22 games.

Cornwall broke through with Liton’s wicket, and Bangladesh collapsed after his dismissal, losing their last four wickets over 15 runs.

But the spinners got the hosts back on track, playing with a tight line and length.

Offspinner Nayeem Hasan made his way into the fourth over, sacking West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite (6) after video review.

Offspinner Mehidy Hasan then made a sharp turn to eliminate Shayne Moseley (7) for his 100th Test wicket. Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam grabbed the wicket from John Campbell, who scored 18 of 48.

West Indies won the first test by three wickets.
