Security Tightened Across Kolkata For TMC Martyrs' Day Rally

The Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) is preparing to host its massive Martyrs’ Day protest in Kolkata today after a two-year hiatus caused by the Covid-19 epidemic.

The Chief Minister said that the Martyrs’ Day march would be against “authoritarian governance” at the Centre the day before the protest.

Banerjee visited the location to see the preparations and said, “We are devoting this demonstration to the martyrs and against the autocratic government of the Centre.”

The party wants to ensure its yearly rally is a huge success. Abhishek Banerjee, the general secretary of the TMC, said that over 20 lakh people would attend the event.

TMC insiders claim that the party would probably make its intentions for bolstering Opposition unity against the BJP and its goals for pan-India growth known during the event.

Every year on July 21, the TMC honors Martyrs’ Day to remember the 13 persons who died after police opened fire on a Youth Congress demonstration against the Left Front government in 1993 when Banerjee was the YC state president.

Even after she founded the Trinamool Congress in 1998 and became an office in 2011, she has continued to observe the day.
