Shabnam – first woman hanged in independent India. Here is the story of his horrible crime
For the first time in the history of Indian independence, a woman sentenced to death will be executed in the country’s only female execution hall in Mathura. According to various media reports, Shabnam, one of the two convicts in the sensational Amroha murder case, will be executed here. She is the first woman in the country to face hanging in independent India. But the execution date is not yet finalized.
Saleem and Shabnam were having an affair and wanted to get married, but their relationship encountered strong opposition from the woman’s family. On April 15, 2008, Shabnam’s entire family was wiped out and the woman initially pretended that her home in UP’s Amroha district was attacked by unidentified assailants.
During the investigation, it emerged that he had incited Saleem to the crime when he made members of his family drink milk mixed with sedatives before beating them to death. He didn’t even forgive his murdered little nephew, who was strangled to death.
A court in Sessions had sentenced the duo to death. In 2010, they contested the verdict of the court of sessions in the Allahabad High Court. The HC confirmed the death penalty. Shabnam and Saleem then approached the Supreme Court, but the higher court upheld the death sentence in 2015.
No one knows about the only female execution hall in India because no one has been hanged here to date. It was built during British rule in 1870 inside the Mathura jail. The only mention of this hanging room in India can be found in the UP Jail Manual, 1956, which lays down detailed rules for the execution of women sentenced to death.
The jail is located near Jawahar Bagh, which witnessed a bloody fight in 2016 between the police and members of the little-known armed sect led by Ramvriksh Yadav, who called themselves followers of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and campaigned for a strange set of demands.
Mathura Prison was established in 1870, about 150 years ago. Along with the jail, a women’s execution room was also built within the prison walls.
