Shashank Manohar resigns as ICC president after four years

Shashank Manohar resigned as ICC president on Wednesday after two, two years in office.

Imran Khwaja, who was vice president, will become the interim president until a successor is chosen, the ICC Board meeting decided on Wednesday.

“On behalf of the ICC Board and staff and the entire cricket family, I would like to thank Shashank for his leadership and all he has done for the sport as ICC President. We wish him and his family the best for the future, ”said ICC Chief Executive Manu Sawhney.

After ascending to the presidency in November 2015, Manohar went on to claim a second term in 2018 when he was elected without opposition a second time.

Now, after his resignation, former ECB President Colin Graves and current BCCI President Sourav Ganguly are the top candidates for the job. Former Cricket West Indies boss Dave Cameron, New Zealander Gregor Barclay, Chris Nenzani of Cricket South Africa have also shown interest at different times.

The 62-year-old lawyer had previously been president of BCCI twice: the first term was from 2008 to 2011 and the second from October 2015 to May 2016, a part of which coincided with the ICC presidency.

Manohar, under ICC rules, could have stayed for another two-year term, as a maximum of three terms is allowed for an independent president.

The process for the election of the President is expected to be approved by the ICC Board within the next week.
