A shooter wearing military-style attire and body armor opened fire with a rifle at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, killing at least 10 people before being apprehended Saturday afternoon.
The number of other persons shot, and their situations at the Tops Friendly Market were not immediately clear. The two officials were not allowed to talk publicly about the situation and spoke on the condition of anonymity.
However, investigators suspect the shooter was broadcasting the shooting via a camera attached to his helmet.
According to the official, the footage showed the shooter, clad in military gear, coming up to the front of the shop with a weapon on the front seat, then exiting the car and starting fire while aiming the rifle at bystanders in the parking lot.
The official video also shows the guy entering the store and shooting many more people inside.
According to the source, one of the casualties was a recently retired police officer working as a security guard at the business.
One of the sources stressed that the investigation was still in its early stages and that investigators had not yet determined a clear motive.
But that they were looking into whether the shooting was racially motivated.
The grocery is located approximately 3 miles (5 kilometers) north of downtown Buffalo in a mostly black area.
The neighborhood around the business is mostly residential, with a Family Dollar store and a fire station nearby.
Buffalo police said the shooter was in custody in a tweet. But did not name the suspect.
Police authorities did not immediately reply to requests for comment from the Associated Press.
According to one of the authorities, witnesses stated the shooter was dressed in military-style attire and had body armor.
Braedyn Kephart and Shane Hill, both 20 years old, arrived in the parking lot just as the gunman left.
He was characterized as a Caucasian man in his late teens or early twenties wearing complete camouflage, a black helmet, and a rifle.
“With the rifle to his chin, he stood there. What the hell was going on, we wondered. Why is this youngster holding a pistol to his head?”
According to Kephart. He got down on his knees. “He pulled off his helmet, dropped his rifle, and cops tackled him.”
“We are stunned and saddened by this terrible act of violence,” Tops Friendly Markets said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.”
Police cordoned off the street, crowded with onlookers, and yellow police tape encircled the parking lot.
Finally, late Saturday afternoon, Mayor Byron Brown and Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz arrived at the site, gathering in a parking lot across the street from the Tops supermarket. They were due to address the media.
Erica Pugh-Mathews was waiting outside the business, behind the police tape, more than two hours after the shooting.
“We’d want to know how my aunt, my mother’s sister, is doing. She was with her fiancé at the store, but they split off and walked to different aisles, “she claimed.
“A gunshot only missed him. He was able to hide in a freezer. But he could not reach my aunt and is unaware of her whereabouts. We simply want to know whether she’s alright in any case.”
Gov. Kathy Hochul said she was “closely following the incident at a grocery store in Buffalo,” where she lives.
She said that state officials had assisted local governments.
For example, on social media, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office stated it had ordered all available staff to help Buffalo police.
According to Justice Department spokesman Anthony Coley, Attorney General Merrick Garland was informed of the incident.
The shooting occurred a little over a year after a ten-person assault at a King Soopers grocery store in Boulder, Colorado, in March 2021.
Investigators have not said why they think the guy involved in the assault chose the shop as his target.
