Spain’s Garbine Muguruza starts with a win over Magdalena Frech at Eastbourne. 

In the first round of the Rothesay International in Eastbourne, Great Britain, fifth-seeded Garbine Muguruza of Spain defeated Magdalena Frech 6-1, 7-6 (7).

Sara Sorribes Tormo, a countrywoman, didn’t fare as well, falling 7-5, 6-1 to Kazakhstan’s No. 16 seed Yulia Putintseva. The match between Czech seventh seed Barbora Krejcikova and Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk was called off after two sets, with each player winning one set.

Number 17 Alison Riske was defeated by Magda Linette of Poland in a three-hour-and-nine-minute set. 

However, Linette returned to win 6-7 (3), 6-3, 7-6 (4), and move to the next round.

Alize Cornet of France won her first match 6-2, 6-4 against Anna Kalinskaya of Russia at Bad Homburg, Germany.

Angelique Kerber, the third seed from Germany, had her match against Anastasia Gasanova of Russia halted in the first set, with Kerber leading 4-2.
