Stalin Says No to CAA if DMK voted to power

DMK Chairman MK Stalin promised on Monday that the Citizenship (Amendment) Law will not be allowed in Tamil Nadu if his party was elected to power in the April 6 Assembly elections and criticized the ruling AIADMK for ‘supporting ‘the BJP in Parliament on the matter.

Protests against the controversial Act had previously broken out in various parts of the country, including in Shaheen Bagh in Delhi.

Addressing an electoral meeting in Jolarpet, Stalin accused the ruling AIADMK of “acting out a drama” on the matter before the polls and recalled that his party had previously organized protests against the CAA and also launched a massive signature campaign against it.

“I assure you. We are going to come to power, there is no doubt about that. So after we come to power, we will not allow this CAA (to be implemented) in Tamil Nadu. This is a guarantee given by Stalin,” he said.

The DMK shared an “umbilical cord” with minorities and will always stand behind them, Stalin added.

He also recalled that his party had opposed the bill in Parliament.

The AIADMK supported the ruling BJP at the Center on issues such as the repeal of Article 370 and the abolition of the Triple Talaq, but was now “playing a drama” as if he were a protector of minorities, Stalin said as he lashed out at his archrival match.

He also criticized Chief Minister K Palaniswami for failing to pass an assembly resolution against the three contentious central agricultural laws and faced strong resistance from farmers who agitated outside Delhi for about four months, noting that states such as Punjab, West Bengal, and Kerala had done it.

He promised to do the same in the state if his party won the April 6 elections and formed a government.

Several promises made in DMK’s manifesto for the ballot box, including 1,000 rupees “rights assistance” to female heads of households, would reduce oil prices if they were to vote for power, he said.
