Surat bakery owner surrenders for the hit-and-run case
The owner of Atul Bakery in Surat, Atul Vekariya, turned himself into Surat police on Wednesday in connection with an alleged hit-and-run case.
Vekariya, who was free on bail, escaped after being charged with sections of wrongful death that did not amount to murder and drunk driving.
Vekariya allegedly shot down a Urvashi Chaudhary (29) with his van near the JH Ambani school in the Umra area on the night of March 26. The woman was pronounced dead upon arrival by a local hospital. Vekariya, who tried to escape from the scene, was captured by the local population.
The Umra police had recorded a crime under sections 279, 337, 338, 304 (a) of the IPC against the defendant, and he was later released on bail.
Later, a medical examination discovered that Vekariya was drunk. On the basis of the medical examination report and the primary investigation, the Umra police had added Section 304 of the IPC (Wrongful Death Not Equal to Murder) and Section 185 of the Motor Vehicle Law (Driving by a Drunk Person) against the bakery owner after obtaining approval from the Surat district court. .
The police were on the lookout for Atul Vekariya and carried out search operations at the place of his relatives and also kept watch at his home in the city of Surat.
On Wednesday afternoon, Atul Vekariya arrived at the Umra police station and turned himself in. Police performed a rapid antigen test on him at New Civil Hospital and it came back positive. Later, an RT-PCR test was also performed.
Police Deputy Commissioner Vidhi Chaudhary said: “After the RT-PCR test report comes in, we will arrest you if it comes back negative. If the report is positive, we will wait until you receive full treatment. You will be under police observation during treatment. ”
