Sutton thinks Rangers boss Gerrard would accept Villa's job

Sutton thinks Rangers boss Gerrard would accept Villa’s job.

Chris Sutton has told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club who thinks Steven Gerrard would trade the Rangers for Aston Villa.

Gerrard, 41, is strongly linked with a move to Aston Villa. The mail report that talks could start between Villa and Rangers this week.

Christian Purslow wants to have a manager in place by the time Villa hosts Graham Potter’s Brighton next week. It must move quickly.

The Mail report also states that Gerrard would be interested, but would want to bring four of his Rangers coaches with him.

Discussing Gerrard’s reports to Villa, the Celtic icon and former Villa forward Sutton feels Gerrard would trade the Rangers for the Midlands club.

He sees that Sutton disagrees with Danny Murphy, who questioned why he would have to trade Rangers for Villa before landing the job at Liverpool.

“If you ask me if he was offered the job, would he take it? I think I would, ”Sutton said. “I don’t want to call Aston Villa a stepping stone.

“They are a huge club, but maybe you need to learn your trade at a club like Aston Villa. I think it could do you good.

“I wonder if Steven Gerrard has reached the end of his useful life. If he is offered the job, I’m pretty sure he’ll take it.”

Sutton on Gerrard: Villa’s job is perfect for Rangers manager

Murphy claims that, given the Rangers’ size, Gerrard could simply go straight from the Scottish club to Liverpool, but he needs experience.

Just look at Frank Lampard. A short but successful stint at Derby County saw Lampard go straight to Chelsea’s job, but it only lasted 18 months.

Gerrard needs to join a club he is confident he can shine. In Villa he will have money and a good group of players.

They are much more capable than a drop scrap. In fact, even without Jack Grealish, the top 10 is not out of reach. It is ideal for Gerrard.

For Villa, Gerrard would be an exciting date. A Premier League legend, but also a talented boss – he lost just one of his last 52 league games.
