“More damage is expected if the rain intensifies,” the minister said. Several areas of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, have witnessed heavy rains in the past two days.

The Meteorology department recommended “alert” and preparedness on Tuesday for the districts of Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Theni, Tenkasi, and Tirunelveli.

In a bulletin, the department said cyclonic circulation persists over the southeastern Bay of Bengal and the sea adjacent to the southern Andaman, extending up to 5.8 kilometers above mean sea level.
