Tamil Nadu rains LIVE updates: death toll rises to 5, Red Alert issued.
The death toll in Tamil Nadu due to rain-related incidents on Tuesday rose to five, said Tamil Nadu Revenue and Disaster Management Minister KKSSR Ramachandran. He added that 538 huts were damaged and four houses totally damaged.
“More damage is expected if the rain intensifies,” the minister said. Several areas of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, have witnessed heavy rains in the past two days.
To clean up waterlogging, subway flooding, and rain-related tasks, Greater Chennai Corporation deployed 23,000 people who toiled through the rains to restore normalcy.
The Meteorology department recommended “alert” and preparedness on Tuesday for the districts of Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Theni, Tenkasi, and Tirunelveli.
In a bulletin, the department said cyclonic circulation persists over the southeastern Bay of Bengal and the sea adjacent to the southern Andaman, extending up to 5.8 kilometers above mean sea level.
