“President Joseph R Biden spoke today with Russian President Vladimir Putin of Russia and asked Russia to ease tensions with Ukraine,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said in an email today (December 30, 2021).
“Biden stated his position that Biden has made it clear that the United States along with its allies, partners, and allies would react decisively should Russia expands its military presence in Ukraine,” the statement said.
During the phone call with Putin, “Biden also expressed his support for diplomacy, beginning in the new year with the bilateral Strategic Stability Dialogue, at NATO through the NATO-Russian Council, and within the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe,” Psaki declared.
US president was also clear that substantive advancement in these talks will only occur within a context of de-escalation instead of escalation. The telephone conversation with the leaders was 50 minutes.
