Trump Smashes McConnell Over Debt Ceiling Deal With Democrats.
Former President Donald Trump on Saturday disemboweled Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell for temporarily engaging with Senate Democrats. debt ceiling agreement, his latest broadside against the top Republican in Washington as Trump continues to hint at a presidential race in 2024.
Trump made the remarks at a rally in Des Moines, Iowa, in which Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds, Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, and Sen. Chuck Grassley also took the stage.
“To think that we had 11 Republicans according to an extension. Directed by Mitch McConnell, can you believe that? Trump said about the debt ceiling deal. And do you know what it does? It gives the Democrats more time, two months, it gives them more time to figure it out. Now they may have two more months to figure out how to screw us, okay. ”
McConnell proposed a debt ceiling agreement that began negotiations with the Democrats, with the Senate votes 50-48 last week to extend the debt limit until early December. Eleven Senate Republicans, including McConnell, broke ranks to vote with all Democrats to overcome an obstructionism so that the measure could move forward.
The former president, who has repeatedly hinted at a 2024 presidential bid, also criticized McConnell for not supporting efforts to annul the results of the 2020 elections.
“Mitch McConnell should have challenged that choice, because even back then we had a lot of material to challenge that choice. I should have challenged the election, “Trump said. “He’s just a leader because he raises a lot of money and gives it to the senators, that’s all he has. That is his only form of leadership. ”
McConnell has criticized Trump’s unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud, of which there is no evidence in the 2020 presidential election.
Trump has gone after McConnell at various points this year amid icy tensions.
The previous president called McConnell, a “grim, sullen and serious political stunt” after the Kentucky senator criticized Trump for his behavior on the day of the insurrection on the US Capitol and after.
He also asked Senate Republicans to replace McConnell with a new leader in an April interview with Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo, and in July, Trump insulted McConnell as an “Old Crow,” which McConnell told CNN it was “quite an honor.”
“Old Crow is Henry Clay’s favorite bourbon,” he said at the time.
