Ubisoft confirms 13-year-old fan theory about Far Cry 2

Ubisoft confirms the 13-year-old fan theory about Far Cry 2.

For years, fans have speculated that Far Cry 2 villain The Jackal and Far Cry protagonist Jack Carver are the same. Now, 13 years after the sequel’s release, the game’s creative director has confirmed the theory to be true, though it has never been corroborated by any in-game material.

In an interview with IGN For a documentary on the villains of the Far Cry series, Far Cry 2 creative director Clint Hocking confirmed that Jack Carver was definitely The Jackal.

“The Jackal is supposed to be Jack Carver from the original Far Cry,” Hocking confirmed. “Jack Carver in the original Far Cry was kind of a cunning thief, smuggler, an arms dealer. The idea was [the Jackal] it’s just him, 10 years later or something like that, having seen everything he saw on this island. Maybe it was drug-induced, maybe it’s PTSD, or maybe it’s real. But the idea is that, a decade later, he has improved his smuggling game and has become embroiled in this conflict. ”

The confirmation is a sweet vindication for all the fans who believed in the Jackal theory, having reconstructed it from a series of clues left by the development team. The theory was already very credible after data miners revealed that all of The Jackal’s texture files have “jackcarver” in the name. Others had suggested the link after noting that the two characters had similar backgrounds, both had served in the US Navy, and were involved in the illegal arms trade.

The first two Far Cry games aren’t the only ones in the series that are linked, with recurring characters and events giving the impression that all games occur in the same enduring world. Far Cry 6 will be the next game that will allow players to explore this world when it launches on October 7.
