Ukraine rejects Russia's 5 am deadline for the surrender of Mariupol

Ukraine rejects Russia’s 5 am deadline for the surrender of Mariupol.

Mariupol: The Russian military has offered Ukrainian forces holding the important port of Mariupol. It is for the opportunity to lay down their arms and leave the city via humanitarian corridors. Still, the Ukrainian leadership has promptly rejected the offer.

On Sunday, Col Gen. Mikhail Mizintsev said that all Ukrainian forces would be able to leave the Azov Seaport on Monday, following safe routes for evacuating civilians previously agreed upon with Ukraine, and travel to territories under Ukrainian control.

“All those who lay down their arms will be assured a safe evacuation from Mariupol,” he declared. Russia will wait until 5 a.m. Monday for a written answer from Kyiv to its suggestion for Ukrainian forces to leave Mariupol, but Mizintsev did not explain what action Russia will take if its “humanitarian offer” is refused.

In remarks quoted by the Ukrainska Pravda news agency, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said Kyiv has already reminded Russia that “there can be no talk of capitulation and putting down weapons.” The Russian remark was deemed “manipulation” by her.

If the Ukrainian army agreed to leave the city, Mizintsev stated that humanitarian supplies would be sent promptly. He also said that civilians would have the option of going or staying in Mariupol.
