Unmukt Chand says goodbye to Indian cricket.

Unmukt Chand, the former U19 World Cup winning captain from India, announced on Friday his retirement from Indian cricket at the age of 28, saying he is open to “better opportunities around the world”.

“I don’t know how I should feel because I’m honestly still figuring it out,” he wrote in a heartfelt post on Twitter. “The very thought of not being able to represent my country again literally stops my heart beating for a while. Personally, there have been quite a few glorious moments in my cricket journey in India. Winning the U19 World Cup in India is one of the most important moments of my life. It was a special feeling to raise the glass as captain and bring smiles to so many Indians around the world. I can never forget that feeling, “he added.

Chand, who led the U19 team at the 2012 World Cup, came into the spotlight after scoring an undefeated 111 in the tournament final. After becoming a regular for India A, he was also team captain until 2015.

The heroic acts of the right-handed hitter helped him reach the 30-member squad for the 2013 Champions Trophy. He also made the 30-member squad for the 2014 T20 World Cup, but failed to win a call-up from India. Despite being marked by success at the top level, Chand never represented India internationally.

Domestically, Chand began his career with Delhi in 2010. After being retired from the Vijay Hazare Trophy team in 2017, he switched his base to Uttarakhand in 2019. In seven games that season, he scored just 195 runs.

Regarding his participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Chand landed a contract in 2011 with Delhi Capitals (then known as Delhi Daredevils). He continued to practice his trade for other franchises such as Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians.
