US Speaker Nancy Pelosi will visit Taiwan Ignoring China’s Threat.
Taiwanese media claimed that US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi was planning to go to the island country despite warnings from China when she began her secretive Asia trip on Monday.
According to a story in the Liberty Times that quoted unnamed sources, Pelosi was expected to visit Taiwan’s parliament on Wednesday morning.
If Pelosi visits the self-governing island that Beijing claims, China has repeatedly warned the US that its military would never “sit idly by.”
Amid deteriorating relations between Washington, DC, and Beijing, the speaker, second in line for the president, started her Asia trip in Singapore.
According to the foreign ministry of Taiwan, there was no information on Pelosi’s trip intentions. Pelosi’s office said on Sunday that she was heading a congressional group for her travels to Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan amid rumors about her upcoming trip to Taiwan. However, Taiwan was not mentioned in the message.
Pelosi visiting Taiwan would be “a blatant intervention in China’s internal affairs,” according to Zhao Lijian, a spokeswoman for the Chinese foreign ministry, who warned that it would have “extremely significant developments and repercussions.”
