Virat Kohli, captain of the Indian cricket team, took a stroll down memory lane on Tuesday and recalled the Adelaide Test during the India tour of Australia in 204 which he said will always be a significant milestone for the team.
The Adelaide game played December 9-13, has often been touted as perhaps the best game in the Border-Gavaskar series. Both sides participated in a gladiator battle between bat and ball that lasted until the last day, but it was ultimately the home team that won the game.
But even before the first ball was thrown, Kohli had won over the Australian crowd after he, along with coach Ravi Shastri, attended the funeral of the late Australian cricketer Phil Hughes.
Hitting first Australia put a 517/7 in his first innings, courtesy of David Warner (145), Steve Smith (162 not out) and Michael Clarke (128).
In response, India (444) defended itself with Captain Kohli leading from the front with a brave 115 and significant contributions from Cheteshwar Pujara (73), Ajinkya Rahane (62) and Murali Vijay (53).
Australia, in its second entry, records 290/5 dec. and set India a goal of 363. After firing just two hitters while giving 205 runs in the first two sessions, and leaving with only 158 to protect in at least 37 overs after tea, Australia claimed the last eight Indian wickets by 73. Kohli once again scored a brave 141 but to no avail when Nathan Lyon’s spin (7/152) wove a net around the Indian hitters.
Recalling the epic contest, Kohli went to Twitter and wrote: “Let’s remember this special and important test on our journey as the test team that we are today. Adelaide 2014 was an exciting game on both sides and an amazing one for people to see as well. Although we didn’t cross the line so close, it taught us that … ”
. Everything is possible if we set our mind to it because we committed ourselves to doing something that seemed very difficult at first but almost succeeded. All of us committed to that. This will always remain a very important milestone on our journey as a test. ”
