Both arrested men, TMC leader Kush Bera and Suman Mondal were brought before the court, which held them in judicial custody for 14 days. Bera’s arrest Wednesday came hours after BJP MPs Locket Chatterjee and Soumitra Khan protested outside the Bagnan police station and blocked the NH-6, demanding immediate action against the accused. Bera is the husband of a local panchayat Samiti member.

Meanwhile, BJP Mahila Morcha organized a procession with the woman’s body and protested in front of Bera’s house. Angry local people were furious and ransacked the homes of the TMC leader and one of his relatives.

Some BJP protesters alleged that a person in the Bera home had left and attacked a BJP youth worker. Mahila Morcha state president Agnimitra Paul visited the victim’s home and comforted her daughter.

“I will urge all women to take what they find at home, be it sticks or any sharp instruments, and they will resist such attacks in the future. I also ask the administration not to force us to take the law into our own hands. You must take action against all those who carry out such attacks against women, ”said Paul.
