Who warns Omicron will infect more than 50% of Europe’s population within next 5-6 weeks

Who warns Omicron will infect more than 50% of Europe’s population within next 5-6 weeks.

On Tuesday, January 11, 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that over 50% of Europe’s population would become infected by the Omicron variant within the next 6-8 weeks.

“We are now in 2022, with Central Asia and Europe still under severe pressure from COVID-19. Hans Henri P Kluge (whole body’s Regional Director for Europe) stated that the Omicron variant is a new west-to-east tidal wave that has swept across the Region. This comes on top of the Delta surge, which all countries managed until late 2021.

He said that more than 7 million COVID-19 cases were reported to the Region in the first week of 2022. This is more than double the number of COVID-19 cases in 2 weeks.

“As of January 10, 26 countries reported that more than 1% of their people are catching COVID-19 each day. He stated that mortality rates are stable and remain high in countries with high COVID-19 prevalence, combined with lower vaccination uptake.

Kluge reported that Omicron had been confirmed in fifty of 53 central Asian countries. It is rapidly becoming a ‘dominant’ variant in western Europe, spreading to the Balkans.

He said, “At this rate, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluations (IHME), forecasts that Omicron will infect more than 50% of the Region’s population within the next 6-8 weeks.”

Highly transmissible Omicron variant

According to the WHO Regional Director for Europe, Omicron is highly transmissible. This is due to the mutations it has acquired that allow it to stick to human cells more quickly and infect people who have not been previously infected.

However, he reiterated that all currently approved coronavirus vaccinations provide excellent protection against severe diseases and death, even for Omicron.

We see an increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations due to the extraordinary transmission scale. He said that Omicron threatens to overwhelm many other countries and disrupt the health system and service delivery.
