Co-WIN, a digital platform / app that monitors the COVID-19 vaccine in real-time, has played a pivotal role in the government’s coronavirus immunization campaign.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is ready to share his thoughts on the digital platform during the CoWIN Global Conclave, scheduled for 3 pm. More than 50 countries such as Mexico, Iraq, Vietnam, Peru, Nigeria, United Arab Emirates, Dominican Republic, Panama, Ukraine, and Uganda have shown interest in learning about Co-WIN technology to run their own Covid vaccination programs.
As CoWIN prepares to go global, here’s a look at everything that can be done through Co-WIN
What is CoWIN?
Co-WIN, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the first phase of the world’s largest vaccination campaign, has become a buzzword in the country.
Co-WIN is an enhanced version of the government’s Electronic Vaccine Intelligence Network (eVIN) to strategize, implement, monitor, and evaluate Covid-19 vaccination across the country.
The application has been created to be a cloud-based IT solution for planning in India. It not only helps the government coordinate the mass inoculation process; but it helps us to obtain real-time data on the vaccination campaign.
CoWIN allows you to reserve slots
CoWIN, the technological backbone of the unit in India, allows beneficiaries to reserve their vaccination places by registering with their mobile phone number. All adults can now go out to get vaccinated as the previous registration at Cowin.gov.in is no longer necessary, but one must necessarily register on the site before getting vaccinated.
You can search the Co-WIN portal for the vaccination center closest to your location, either by searching through the PIN code or by choosing the state and district.
Vaccination certificate
Through Co-Win, one can download the vaccination certificate from their registered account as soon as they receive the vaccine. The vaccination certificate is verifiable proof of vaccination that you can use to establish that you have been vaccinated where such a requirement is specified.
Editing certificate
A new update to CoWIN allows the applicant to correct any errors in the name, year of birth, and gender printed on the vaccination certificate. CoWIN vaccination certificates, used at the time of travel, do it without any hassle.
CoWIN allows you to link your passport with your vaccination certificate
The CoWin portal allows users to link their vaccination certificates with passports to use during the trip. In case the details between the vaccination certificate and the passport do not match, the details can also be edited.
Merge certificates
COVID-19 vaccine recipients, who received doses by enrolling from two different phone numbers and received two different certificates, can now merge the two certificates through the CoWIN portal.
Recipients can log into CoWin with their registered cell phone number, click the “Raise a Problem” option, select “Combine Multiple Interim First Dose Certificates”, and follow the steps listed to obtain the final vaccination certificate.
For a country showing a growing affinity for digital technologies, CoWIN serves as the technological backbone necessary to overcome information asymmetry and ensure equitable access to vaccination for all.
However, CoWIN India’s backbone in vaccinating millions of people has also come under fire.
CoWIN hack
Last month, speculation came true by claiming that a group of hackers had accessed the database of some 150 million registered CoWin users and that the data was for sale. However, the government called it “incorrect” and “baseless”.
“We state this with absolute certainty that no violations have been found to date. No script can bypass OTP and CAPTCHA verification to automatically register an individual,” the government said.
