Duolingo has added Finnish to the list of languages that you can learn on its website and app. Finnish is known to be one of the most difficult languages to learn, so those interested in learning to speak Finnish clearly need all the help they can get.
What is Duolingo?
For the uninitiated, Duolingo offers an interesting way to learn languages in small pieces. Using gamification to help you master a new language. And as someone who has used Duolingo to learn a little Italian, I can attest to its effectiveness.
Over the years, Duolingo has added dozens of new languages to its line. This means that you can now learn to speak Chinese, learn to speak Hindi, and learn to speak Arabic, all with Duolingo. Hell, Star Trek fans can even learn to speak Klingon
Now you can learn to speak Klingon with Duolingo
That’s right, folks, now you can learn to speak Klingon from the comfort of your own sofa. Just grab the blood cake and Rokeg blood wine as you do so.

Why is it so difficult to master Finnish?
Now Duolingo has added Finnish to the mix. Which has been one of the most requested languages to learn in Duolingo (behind Maori and Gaelic). However, Finnish is, for various reasons, a particularly difficult language to learn, so don’t expect to master it quickly.
As explained in the Duolingo blog, Finnish has very little in common with the Scandinavian languages spoken in neighboring countries. So while Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian (as Germanic languages) share similar words, Finnish stands alone.

It is not only that which marks the Finn as difficult to learn either. It has 15 grammatical cases, unlike the three generally found in English. This means that you are unlikely to master Finnish, even with the help of Duolingo (and extra homework).
Still, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth a try, and since Duolingo uses a variety of techniques to slowly develop your understanding of a new language, you may be able to learn enough Finnish to carry on a conversation with a Finnish. Perhaps. Over many years.
