Former captain Younis Khan resigned as Pakistan’s hitting coach on Tuesday in a surprise decision that, according to the cricket board, was agreed “reluctantly but amicably”, although the reasons for this were not specified.
The Pakistan team will begin a UK tour from June 25 to July 20 for three ODIs and three T20Is. The team will then travel to the West Indies from July 21 to August 24 to perform in five T20Is and two events.
“The Pakistan men’s national cricket team will travel to the UK without a hitting coach, while the decision to nominate Younis Khan’s replacement for the West Indies tour will be made in due course,” said a statement from the Pakistan Cricket Board two days before the team’s departure. .
The announcement was followed by speculation that Younis himself had decided to leave the position because he was unhappy with his position and wanted to have more voice in recruitment matters.
According to a source, he was not satisfied with the way the national team is preparing for the future.
Younis was named last year in November on a two-year contract until the ICC T20 World Cup in 2022.
PCB CEO Wasim Khan said it was sad to lose an expert of Younis’ stature and experience.
“After a series of discussions, we have both reluctantly but mutually and amicably agreed that it was time to move in different directions,” he added.
“… I hope he is available to help the PCB by sharing his vast knowledge with emerging cricketers.”
Both PCB and Younis agreed not to comment further on the reasons for the former captain’s departure, according to the board’s statement.
Younis, who remains Pakistan’s best test runner with over 10,000 races, has had his fair share of cricket system problems.
In 2007, he refused to captain the Pakistan team in the Champions Trophy after not having time to meet with the president of the PCB.
In 2009, he resigned as captain after a revolt by some players against his leadership style.
At the end of his career, he even returned a cash award given to him by the PCB, as he was not happy with the treatment the authorities had given him.
