After Argentina's Finalissima, Giorgio Chiellini Will Say "Ciao" To Italy

Giorgio Chiellini will end his international career this summer when Italy takes on Argentina in the so-called “Finalissima” at Wembley, where he has had the best time of his life. The 37-year-old was a big part of the Azzurri’s Euro 2020 victory.

He led his country to a dramatic victory over England at the stadium, where he will lead out his countrymen on June 1. If you want to see the European and South American champions face each other in a one-time match, this game is for you.

At Wembley, he told DAZN he would say farewell to his national team. “I reached the highest point of my career when I won Euro,” he said.

“If I could, I’d like to say goodbye to the Azzurri with a good thought. Italy won’t play me again.”

Chiellini’s goal was to play in one more World Cup before he said “ciao” to fans. Italy didn’t make the 2022 tournament in Qatar, which pushed the defender’s departure from international football even faster.

He has had a mixed career in Italy. He made it to the Euro 2012 final, where Italy lost 4-0 to Spain, but he had a hard time at the World Cup finals.

Italy didn’t make it out of the group stage in 2010 and 2014. Then, in 2017, they lost to Sweden in a historic play-off that cost them a place in the 2018 World Cup.

Chiellini also had to deal with the embarrassment of being bitten by Luis Suarez as Italy and Uruguay were knocked out of the World Cup in 2014.

North Macedonia knocked Roberto Mancini’s team out of the 2022 edition of the World Cup in Qatar last month, again in the play-offs. Mancini’s team must wait until at least 2026 to play in the World Cup again.
