Barcelona went third in La Liga

When Barcelona came from behind to beat Elche 2-1 on Sunday, they moved to third place in La Liga.

Memphis Depay scored an injury-time penalty to secure the hard-fought win.

Elche took a surprise lead at the Martinez Valero when Fidel scored on the stroke of half-time thanks to a Pedri mistake.

Barca came back with two substitutes. Torres got in close on the hour before Depay scored a penalty after Elche’s Antonio Barragan drew the ball into his own goal with his hands.

He said, “It looked like we were going to lose a game that we didn’t deserve to lose.” “We should have won more than one goal.”

The victory moves Barcelona two points above Real Betis and three points ahead of Atletico Madrid.

Later on Sunday, Atletico and Betis face each other in a fight for the top four.

Xavi’s team hasn’t lost in the league since December, and they came into this game having scored four goals in three straight games for the first time since 2017.

If Barcelona had hired Xavi in November, they would have been ninth in the league.

Sevilla, who are only seven points behind them in second, might now be a good target for them.

He said, “We have won four games in a row, which hasn’t happened in a long time. This is a good sign. There is a lot of faith in what we are doing. We’re on the right track. ”

First, Barcelona had more chances. Frenkie de Jong had the best of them, but he couldn’t score.

There was then a sprint by Ousmane Dembele. His shot was parried out to De Jong, whose follow-up was blocked by Diego Gonzalez on the goal line.

Elche then hit Barca with a surprise goal-kick just before half-time.

Barca couldn’t deal with a simple goal-kick downfield, and Pedri poked the ball back through his defence and into Fidel’s path.

Fidel took a small step and fired into the far corner of the field.

Barcelona scored a goal on the hour when they worked the ball from left to right.

Dembele ran to the line and crossed the ball. Jordi Alba could not catch the ball cleanly, but Torres was perfectly placed to steer in.

At this point, Elche was tired, and Barca was trying to score a goal.

Depay got around Barragan, the ball came up, and Barragan instinctively raised his arm to meet it.

The referee looked at the replay, pointed to the spot, and Depay swung the penalty into the top corner. Depay did an excellent job.

In the 94th minute, Alba and Sergio Busquets were relieved to see that the referee didn’t give them penalties for handballs.

Guido Carrillo then headed for the corner at the last minute. Marcus ter Stegen dived, and Barcelona held on to win.
