BJP Fires J&K Party Leader After Extortion Charges Arrest

The BJP fired its Bandipora district president in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday after he and another party leader were detained for extorting money from a woman to arrange her brother’s release from police detention.

It was a woman’s story that she was robbed of one lakh by Abdul Rehman Tikri, district president of Bandipora, and another party leader, Mushtaq Ahmad, Sarpanch (elected village head). The police have charged the two of them.

They have both been arrested. Hours after Tikri was arrested, Ravinder Raina, the BJP state president, let him do his job.

“Abdul Rehman Tikri is no longer District President of the BJP in Bandipora, and he is no longer in charge of any party work.” : Raina

There have been claims that touts try to get money from families when the police arrest their relatives.

Srinagar police asked people to come forward and report any requests for bribes that they saw. The police also put out phone numbers and email addresses for people to call or write if someone wants to pay them to do something.

“Those who live in the Srinagar district are asked to come forward and report any requests for bribery or favours from any Srinagar District employee or officer to the numbers and email below. Srinagar’s SSP is in charge of these numbers and emails. “The police in Srinagar tweeted this.
