Danii Medvedev moves to the last 16 in Miami Open.
Top seed Daniil Medvedev advanced to the last 16 of the Miami Open on Monday, defeating Spaniard Pedro Martinez 6-3 6-4.
At the same time, Naomi Osaka breezed into the quarter-finals of the women’s draw.
Medvedev, who may overtake Novak Djokovic in the world rankings if he makes it to the Miami semi-finals, hit 14 aces and broke Martinez three times to win in 84 minutes.
“I simply felt that I had to be more consistent,” Medvedev explained, “and the more consistent one today would win.”
“I just made a few fewer errors at key points, and I served even better, and it was a small margin, but I won, and I’m extremely thrilled.”

The Russian will face American Jenson Brooksby, who defeated Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut 6-3 5-7 6-4 in the third round at Indian Wells, to reclaim the number one spot.
Carlos Alcaraz, the 14th seed from Spain, will face Stefanos Tsitsipas. They both beat Marin Cilic and Alex de Minaur in straight sets.
At 18 years old, Alcaraz defeated Tsitsipas in their only previous match, a five-set thriller at the US Open last year.
“He’s a fantastic player,” the third-seeded Greek remarked of Alcaraz.
“The ones that I like will be a huge challenge.”
Taylor Fritz, the Indian Wells champion, defeated fellow American Tommy Paul 7-6(2) 6-4 and will face Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic, who defeated Sebastian Korda 7-6(4) 6-3.
It’s all about controlling expectations, according to Fritz.
“It wasn’t until I reached match point in the final that I thought about winning Indian Wells,” he remarked.
“As a result, I’m approaching this one in the same manner. I don’t expect to win the event, but you never know until you play one match at a time.”
