A Varanasi court will decide today whether to hear the Hindu petitioners’ request for an invitation to object to the Gyanvapi mosque videography report first or the Muslim side’s claim that the writ is unmaintainable.
Hearing a petition contesting the shooting of Varanasi’s Gyanvapi mosque, the Supreme Court said on Friday that an experienced Uttar Pradesh judge would consider the matter.
The Supreme Court had also said that the “need for community brotherhood and harmony is paramount” for the court.

Lawyers for Hindu petitioners alleged earlier this week that a ‘Shivling’ was discovered during a videography examination of the Gyanvapi mosque-Shringar Gauri complex.
The mosque committee members refuted the report, claiming it was part of the wazookhana reservoir’s water fountain mechanism, which worshippers utilize to conduct ceremonial ablutions before performing namaz. The ‘wazookhana’ was subsequently ordered sealed by the district court.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ordered a Varanasi court to safeguard the region’s security where the ‘Shivling’ is said to have been discovered but not interfering with “religious observances.”
