Iga Swiatek beat Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland 6-2, 6-0 to become the new world number one in women’s tennis. She did this at the WTA Miami Open.
Swiatek will take the place of Ashleigh Barty, who announced this week that she is retiring. She was a three-time Grand Slam champion. To make sure she would replace Barty, the 20-year-old Warsaw-born tennis star had to win her second-round match at the South Florida hardcourt event.

Swiatek will become the first Polish woman to reach the top of the rankings, breaking the old record set by Agnieszka Radwanska, the world number two at the time.When Swiatek won the French Open in 2020, he became Poland’s first player to win a Grand Slam title.
Swiatek has had a great run in the first few weeks of the year. He has won WTA titles in Doha and Indian Wells and is on a career-best 12-match winning streak.
She’s also the first player since Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in 2009 to win five or more titles before she was 21 years old, which she did.
If Swiatek had lost, Paula Badosa might have taken over as number one, but she would have needed to win the Miami Open.
