Jignesh Mevani, Gujarat’s Independent MLA, has been charged with assault and molestation by a female police constable who was part of the squad that transported him from Guwahati airport to Kokrajhar.
Police sources say that when they were in Assam’s Barpeta district, the constable said that Mr. Mevani had been rude to her. The sources also said he tried to push her against the car seat with his hands and make rude moves.
It was filed at the Barpeta road police station on April 21. Mr. Mevani is charged with obscene acts or words in public, causing harm, using criminal force to stop public servants from doing their jobs, and disrespecting modesty.

It happened right after the Dalit leader was freed on bail in one case on Monday. The police haven’t said much about the second case right after the first one.
A member of the Assam BJP filed a complaint against Mevani on Thursday because he tweeted about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Mevani was arrested in Palanpur, a city in the state of Gujarat, at the time.

A court in the Indian city of Kokrajhar released Mr. Mevani on bail yesterday. He was charged with criminal conspiracy and other crimes, outraging religious feelings and provoking people.
Mr. Mevani’s lawyer, Angshuman Bora, told the news agency Press Trust of India that the new accusations against him are “atrocious.” He said there was no mention of the Barpeta case when he was in police custody for three days.
