Mominul Haque Resigns as Bangladesh Test Cricket Team Captain

After a disappointing run of form this year, Bangladesh Test skipper Mominul Haque announced his resignation on Tuesday to concentrate on his batting.

The 30-year-old told at the residence of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan during a meeting with BCB officials.

His batting has come under fire after the country’s Test series defeat to Sri Lanka earlier this month. He has been demanding to quit ahead of the West Indies trip next month.

“I just informed them that I cannot contribute to the squad as a captain and that I had failed to encourage the group. As a result, I believe it is preferable if the obligation is delegated to someone else. “After the meeting, Mominul informed reporters.

“I believe that if I can focus on my hitting, it will benefit both myself and the team.”

In six Test matches in 2022, Mominul has just one half-century and 162 runs to his name.

His form faded after an 88-run innings in Bangladesh’s eight-wicket triumph against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui in January.

In the recent series against Sri Lanka, where Bangladesh lost 0-1, he only made 11 runs in three innings.

He said that BCB president Nazmul asked him to stay for the rest of the meeting, but he declined.

Nazmul Abedin Fahim, Mominul’s mentor and coach, told AFP that the leadership has “damaged his batting.”

“So, I believe he needs to get rid of this weight to go back into batting form,” he continued.

Mominul has 3,525 runs in 53 Tests, including 11 centuries, which is the most by any Bangladeshi batter.

Mominul was named Test captain for the West Indies trip by the BCB; however, there is suspicion that Shakib Al Hasan may be reappointed.

After the International Cricket Council banned Shakib for failing to disclose corrupt approaches, Mominul took over in November 2019.

Earlier in the morning, a board official stated they were willing to change Mominul’s captain for the series if he so desired.

“At a critical juncture, Mominul was appointed captain. We must show him some respect. We would hunt for a successor if he chooses to go, “Jalal Yunus, the cricket operations head, said to AFP.

On June 5, the team will depart for the West Indies.

During the visit, Bangladesh will also play three Twenty20 internationals and three one-day internationals.
