North Korea tests unknown ballistic missile into the sea. 

On Saturday, North Korea fired at least one ballistic missile toward the sea to the east of the Korean peninsula. This was an apparent test before the South’s presidential election, coming up soon.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff say they saw a suspected ballistic missile launch on Saturday. Japan’s prime minister’s office also said it was a suspected ballistic missile.

This is the ninth test in the last 12 months. The last time North Korea said it tried to make a satellite that could spy on people was February 27.

The South Korean military says that the rocket launched on Saturday came from a place near Sunan, where Pyongyang’s international airport is. 

The airport has been the site of previous tests, including the one on February 27, when the rocket took off.

The presidential Blue House said a meeting of South Korea’s National Security Council would be held in an emergency.

The launch shows how difficult it will be for whoever wins South Korea’s presidential election on Wednesday.

In January, North Korea launched a record number of missiles. There were no talks about denuclearization. 

Instead, it looks like it will launch a spy satellite soon. In addition, it has been said that it could start testing nuclear weapons or its longest-range intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) again for the first time since 2017.

During the upcoming presidential transition in South Korea, North Korea could use the big national holiday on April 15 to test-fire a primary new missile or weapon.

People may find the timing of North Korea’s missile tests weird because of the attention paid to Ukraine worldwide. Jean Lee, a fellow at the Washington-based Wilson Center, said this on Twitter. 

But it makes sense in North Korea, where scientists are working hard to make new weapons that Kim Jong-un can show off at a big military parade in mid-April.

UN Security Council resolutions say that North Korea can’t launch ballistic missiles. This is because the country has been punished for its weapons programs.

People in Pyongyang say that talks can only happen if the United States and its allies stop doing bad things. 

However, the United States has said that it is willing to talk without any conditions.

North Korea’s main nuclear plant has been running at full speed for a long time now, according to the US-based 38 North project, which keeps an eye on the country. 

The plant makes fuel for possible nuclear weapons and expands its nuclear production facilities.
