Brazilian football star Pele is expected to remain in hospital with an infection of the urinary tract in the Sao Paulo hospital, where Pele was getting chemotherapy treatment for his tumor in his colon, as reported by the facility on Monday.
The former player, who is 81, was dubbed “O Rei” (The King) was first taken to Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo on the 13th of February to continue treatment for cancer of the colon discovered in September. The patient has been in hospital until now.
Within eight days of his admission at the hospital, the hospital informed the patient that they discovered an infection of the urinary tract in routine examinations, which could prolong Pele’s stay.
“Clinical conditions are stable, and hospital discharge will be scheduled within the next few days,” the hospital said in a press release on Monday.
Pele was operated on for this tumor in September and then spent one a month at the hospital before being released to resume chemotherapy.
This is the latest series of health issues for the veteran actor who has been getting rarer.
The most admired footballer ever, Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pele’s real name), is the only person ever to win three World Cups (1958, 1962, and 1970).
He exploded onto the international scene at just 17 years old by scoring spectacular goals and two goals in the final against host Sweden in 1958, when Brazil took home the World Cup for the first time in 1958.
He would have one of the best memorable careers in sports and scored over 1,000 points before retiring in 1977.
“As I’ve been doing for the past month, I will be going to the hospital for treatments,” Pele said on his social media accounts on the 13th of February.
