"Science does not lie, but Modi does": Rahul Gandhi on the WHO Covid Deaths Report

In a speech today, Rahul Gandhi said that “science does not lie; Prime Minister Narendra Modi does.” He talked about a WHO report that said there were 4.7 million extra deaths from Covid.

Mr. Gandhi also said that the government should help the families of people who have died by giving them the four lakh compensation.

A tweet from him said: “In India, 47 million people died because of the Covid pandemic, and they were all Indian. Not 4.8 million, as the government said. Indeed, science doesn’t makeup things. It is Modi’s job to help people. “In this case, I would say:

“It is important to show respect to families who have lost a family member. Support them by giving them the 4 lakh compensation that they need. “It was said by the former head of Congress, as well.

“Excess” Covid deaths took place in India between January 2020 and December 2021. That’s 10 times more than the official figure and almost a third of all Covid deaths worldwide. More than double the official figure of 6 million, the report said. The global figure was 15 million, which was more than double.

India has strongly disputed the WHO’s use of a mathematical model to figure out how many people have died from Covid. They say the figure is “totally removed from reality.” The Indian government says that the country has an “extremely robust” system of recording births and deaths. The Union health ministry says that the WHO’s method of collecting data is “statistically unsound and scientifically unsound.”

In the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s words: “India has always questioned WHO’s admission that data about seventeen Indian states was found on some websites and used in their mathematical model.”

“This shows a statistically and scientifically questionable way to get data for extra mortality projections for India,” the statement said. Despite India’s objections to how this modeling exercise was done, the World Health Organization released the extra mortality estimates without adequately addressing India’s concerns, the ministry said.

Indian Covid, Working Group leader Dr. NK Arora, says the WHO report is “worrisome.”

Asked about the discrepancy, Mr. Arora said that in India, the Civil Registration System (CRS) makes sure that many virus-related deaths are registered, even though there can be a 10% to 20% discrepancy.
