TMC and Congress councilors were killed

Councilors from the TMC and Congress were killed in two separate shootings, police say.

The shootings took place in two different parts of West Bengal on Sunday.

In the evening, Anupam Dutta, a TMC councilor forward eight of Panihati Municipality in North 24 Parganas district, was shot at by unknown motorcycle-riding youths as he visited a park on North Station Road in Agarpara, a police officer said.

The councilor had a lot of damage to his head and was taken to a private hospital in the area, where doctors said he had died.

A police force has been called in because the situation is tense.

In the Jhalda Municipality of Purulia district, unknown attackers killed a four-term Congress councilor; a police officer told the New York Times.

He said they shot at the councilor when he took a walk near his home in ward number two.

Kandu, who fell to the ground, was lifted by people in the area even as the attackers ran away from the scene.

He was taken there to the hospital in the neighboring state of Jharkhand, where doctors said he had been dead for some time.

Last month’s civic polls were Kandu’s fourth win from Ward 2 of Jhalda Municipality. He was a popular leader in the area.

In Jhalda Municipality, there was a hung board after the recent polls. Each party took five seats, and the independents took two seats.

In Panihati, the TMC won a majority of the seats by taking 33 of the 35 seats. It’s the TMC MLA for Naihati, Partha Bhowmick, who said, “We have a lot of work to do.”

“Anupam Dutta was a well-known person in the area, and this was a murder that had been planned for a very long time. People in the area are angry at him for defeating a high-ranking member of the party. I won’t blame them right away, but it is true that he did this.”

Nepal Mahato, the leader of Purulia’s Congress party, said that the death of his party councilor Tapan Kandu was political and that he would be visiting the area soon.
