As the conflict between Ukraine and Russia escalates, Ukraine has closed its airspace leaving thousands of Indian citizens stranded on the previously USSR territory.
The airstrikes of Russia have prompted the Ukrainian government to block its airspace.
The government of India began an evacuation campaign and arranged Air India flights to Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, and announced further flights to Ukraine shortly.
Today, India plans to evacuate its Indian citizens via alternative routes.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday, teams have been assigned to the borderlands to Ukraine within Hungary, Poland, Slovak Republic, and Romania to aid in the removal of Indian citizens.
“To aid in the process of removing Indian nationals who are in Ukraine, MEA Teams from India in Hungary, @IndiainPoland and the @IndiaInSlovakia account and the @eoiromania account are headed towards the land border that borders Ukraine,” said Arindam Bagchi, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs.
Indian citizens located in Ukraine near border crossings can contact these teams.

“Indian citizens located in Ukraine near these border points can contact the above teams should they want to leave Ukraine,” said MEA in an announcement.
Partha Satpathy, the ambassador from India in Ukraine, has said India’s Embassy of India in Kyiv will remain operational until each Indian is cleared.
“The Embassy of India in Kyiv is operating all hours of the day, every day. This morning, we awoke to the information that Kyiv was attacked. The whole part of Ukraine has been attacked. This has created lots of worry and uncertainty and resulted in tension. I want to assure all of you that the Embassy of India continues to be open 24 hours a day to ensure the security and safety of Indians in the country,” he said.
The Embassy of India in Ukraine hosted around 200 Indian students in an Indian school near India’s Embassy in Kyiv.
