World Cup schedule forces Asian Champions League final shift

World Cup schedule forces Asian Champions League final shift.

In 2022, the Asian Champions League final will be played on a home-and-away basis in February of next year to allow for the participation of teams from the continent in the World Cup, the Asian Football Confederation has revealed.

Qatar’s host of this year’s World Cup finals in November and December means that the Asia Champions League’s normal slot on the schedule will be unavailable.

Pandemic travel restrictions in the region also have triggered the shift to 2023 in early 2023.

“Asian teams who are expected to be invited to qualifying for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 will need to develop comprehensive preparations for the tournament,” the AFC said in an announcement.

“A desire was felt to make these tune-ups easier to deal with the uncertain circumstances and unanticipated risk.”

The Asian Champions League has been greatly disrupted due to the outbreak.
